Southwater Computer Club

As more and more public services move online, we are increasingly expected to use computers, smartphones, and tablets in our daily lives. From booking GP appointments and managing bank accounts to keeping in touch with family and friends, technology has become unavoidable. But what happens when something doesn’t work as expected, or you simply don’t know where to start? Not everyone has a tech-savvy friend or family member nearby, and online help can often feel confusing or impersonal.

Recognising this growing need, the Southwater Community Partnership set up the Southwater Computer Club to provide friendly, face-to-face support for local people who want help using their devices. The club offers a relaxed and welcoming environment where no question is considered too small or too basic.

The Computer Club meets every Tuesday morning at the Laurie Apted Building, Church Lane. Meetings are centred around one-to-one help, with a team of volunteer mentors on hand to sit down with attendees individually and work through their questions at their own pace. There are no formal lessons and no pressure - just practical, patient help tailored to each person’s needs.

Each week brings a wide variety of queries. Common questions include:

  • How to use email or send messages on WhatsApp

  • Moving photos from a phone to a computer

  • Setting up a new phone, tablet, or laptop

  • Spotting scams and staying safe online

  • Backing up files and photos so nothing is lost

  • Investigating devices that are “doing something strange”

In addition to the regular one-to-one support, we also run occasional short presentations on topics of general interest, such as online safety, switching mobile provider, artificial intelligence and backing up devices. These talks are designed to be clear, jargon-free, and suitable for beginners.

If you need help with any aspect of using your phone, tablet, or laptop, why not come along to a meeting? You don’t need any technical knowledge - just bring your device, enjoy a cup of coffee, and have a chat with one of our friendly mentors.

We are also keen to recruit more mentors. Our mentors are all volunteers who have a passion to be able to help our members resolve a wide range of issues.  We are not a team of computer experts but have a wealth of experience, knowledge and willingness to find the right solution. If you would like to consider helping at the club please contact us at: southwatercomputerclub@gmail.com.
