The Phoenix Tree
A Beacon of Remembrance
Each December, as the festive spirit sweeps through Southwater village, a unique tradition comes to life at Hangman’s Hill roundabout. Here stands the Phoenix Tree, Sequoia Redwood, not just a tree, but a living memorial lovingly decorated by volunteer elves to honour and remember loved ones who have passed away. The brainchild of Polly and Mark, who lost his 6 week old grandson, Phoenix, in 2019, Polly’s original idea of decorating the tree for fun, took on a whole new meaning and it was dedicated to Phoenix.
The tree’s story is one of community, compassion, and remembrance. Every Christmas, a group of dedicated volunteers—affectionately known as the Southwater elves—gather to adorn the tree with personalised baubles with heartfelt messages. Residents are invited to contribute decorations, each representing memories and tributes to family and friends no longer with us. The Little Teahouse in Lintot Square very kindly house a collection box and become the drop off point for the precious baubles
Positioned at the bustling Hangman’s Hill roundabout, the Phoenix Tree occupies a special place in the village’s landscape. Its presence is both a gentle reminder and a celebration, inviting passers-by to pause and reflect. This draws people together to share stories, comfort one another, and find solace in the warmth of community.
We value all of the support we receive from Southwater Parish Council, Southwater Community Partnership, Horsham Forge and The Little Teahouse. Also Sarah Cooper for storing the baubles for us.
For many in Southwater, the Phoenix Tree is more than a Christmas decoration—it is a living memorial. Each bauble hung by the volunteer elves carries a name, a message, or a memory, ensuring that loved ones are not forgotten but celebrated amidst the joy of the season. The ritual of decorating the tree offers a way for people to publicly honour those they miss, fostering a sense of togetherness and healing. The tradition serves as a touching reminder that, even in times of loss, the bonds of community and the act of remembering can light the way forward.
We will be decorating the tree on the morning of Saturday 22nd November . Please give us a hoot and a wave (providing it is safe to do so) as you drive/walk past, this is very motivating to us, and we love to feel that our village is cheering us on.
